Offset Printing and Its Scope
Offset printing is the most popular kind of printing used
these days. Offset printing is so common that almost 40% of all printing jobs
are done by using offset printing. The presence of offset printing is felt in
every industry. It's used in different fields, like education where it's used
for printing books, journals and the different types of reading material. Its
usage isn't limited to this field but it's also used on the outer covers of
many goods. This offset printing technique has led to the possibility of one of
the most important things which we use in our everyday lives: newspapers.
WORKING OF OFFSET PRINTING
Offset printing is a process in which an image is transferred
from an engraved plate to a rubber blanket and then to the printing surface.
The first step in offset printing is to create an image on the plate. The image
must be created backwards so when it is transferred to the blanket, it appears
correctly. The second step is transferring the image from the plate to the
rubber blanket. This is done by placing the blanket over the engraved image on
the plate and running a press with enough pressure to transfer the ink from the
plate onto the blanket. After this process, there are two layers on top of each
other: an ink layer and a rubber layer. These two layers are separated by what
is called erasing or scraping blades. Finally, these separated layers are
transferred once again onto paper using another press with enough
pressure."
To prevent the mixing of oil and water, the method makes use
of the fact that they should not be on the same surface level. This technique
was adapted from lithography; hence offset printing is also referred to as
litho-offset printing.
There are two main kind of offset presses:
Sheet based offset Printing Press: In sheet based offset
printing, single sheets of paper are fed into the press one by one.
Web based offset printing press: In this method the printing is carried on one single sheet of the paper which is available in the form of large rolls. Thus the difference between the two methods is the variation in the form of paper.
