Types of Printing Blankets

 


Printing blankets play a vital role in offset printing by transferring ink from the plate to the paper. Choosing the right type ensures better print quality, press longevity, and overall efficiency. Below are the most common types of printing blankets used in the industry:

 

1. Compressible Blankets: Compressible blankets are the most widely used in modern offset printing. They have a soft layer inside that absorbs pressure during printing, helping to maintain consistent ink transfer while protecting both the plate and press components. These blankets are ideal for high-speed commercial and sheet-fed presses.

 

2. Non-Compressible Blankets: Non-compressible blankets lack the cushioning layer and are more rigid. They are best suited for slow or specialized printing presses where pressure remains consistent. While they offer sharp image transfer, they are less forgiving to press misalignments and mechanical shocks.

 

3. Coated Blankets: Coated blankets have special surface treatments that improve resistance to chemicals, inks, and wear. These coatings help reduce marking, improve ink release, and extend blanket life. They are often used in specialty printing applications such as packaging or with UV and metallic inks.

 

4. UV Printing Blankets: Designed for use with UV inks, UV printing blankets are made with resistant rubber compounds to handle the aggressive solvents found in these inks. They offer excellent durability, consistent performance, and resist swelling or damage caused by UV curing processes.

 

5. Metal-Backed Blankets (MBB): Metal-backed blankets are reinforced with a metal layer, making them dimensionally stable and easy to mount on automated presses. They are commonly used in newspaper and high-speed web printing, where accuracy and longevity are crucial.

 

6. Self-Adhesive Blankets: Self-adhesive blankets come with a built-in adhesive backing, eliminating the need for bars or clamps. These are especially useful for short-run jobs or small-format presses, offering quick installation and minimal maintenance.
